One night three Arabian Horsemen were riding across the dessert. As they crossed a dry river bed, out of darkness a voice called, “ Halt.” They obeyed.
The voice told them to get off their horses, pick up a handful of pebbles, put the pebbles in their pockets, and get back on their horses.
The horsemen got off their horses, picked up a handful of pebbles, put the pebbles in their pockets, and got back on their horses.
The voice then said, “You have done as I commanded. Tomorrow at sun-uo you will be both glad and sorry.”
Puzzled, the horsemen rode on. They found a place to sleep for the night.
In the morning, at sunrise, they reached into their pockets to find a miracle had happened. The pebbles had changed into diamonds, rubies, and other precious stones. They remembered what the voice had said, “Tomorrow at sun-up you will be both glad and sorry.”
They were both glad and sorry-glad they had taken some and sorry they had not taken more.
